Ficus cyathistipula, commonly known as the African Fig Tree, is a lush and resilient tropical plant native to the rainforests of Central and Western Africa. A member of the Moraceae family, this evergreen species is celebrated for its dense, glossy foliage, upright growth, and easy-care nature, making it a perfect choice for homes, offices, and conservatories.

The plant features rich, deep green leaves that are thick, leathery, and oval-shaped with a prominent central vein and smooth texture. Its new growth emerges a lighter green before maturing into a darker shade, giving the canopy a vibrant, layered appearance. Ficus cyathistipula naturally develops a compact, tree-like form and can grow tall indoors, offering a touch of the African tropics to any interior space.

With its robust character and elegant appearance, it’s often compared to Ficus elastica or Ficus benjamina, but it distinguishes itself with a denser, more bushy growth habit and superior tolerance to lower light.

Ficus cyathistipula – Care Guide

Light

Thrives in bright, indirect light but also tolerates moderate light levels. Too little light may slow growth, while direct sunlight can scorch the leaves. Ideal for rooms with filtered daylight or near east- or north-facing windows.

Watering

Water when the top 3–5 cm of soil feels dry. Keep the soil evenly moist but never soggy. Overwatering is the most common cause of leaf drop in Ficus species. In winter, reduce watering slightly and allow the topsoil to dry out more between waterings.

Temperature and Humidity

  • Temperature: Prefers 18–26°C. Avoid cold draughts and temperatures below 12°C.

  • Humidity: Average indoor humidity is fine, though it will appreciate occasional misting to maintain glossy leaves.

Soil and Potting

Use a rich, well-draining, peat-free compost mixed with perlite or bark for aeration. Repot every 2–3 years in spring or when roots begin to outgrow the pot.

Feeding

Feed every 4–6 weeks in spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser to support strong, healthy growth. Pause feeding during winter.

Pruning and Maintenance

Prune lightly to shape the plant and remove any leggy or crossing stems. Wipe leaves regularly with a damp cloth to remove dust and restore shine. Rotate occasionally to ensure even growth on all sides.

Growth and Maturity

A moderate to fast grower, capable of reaching 1.5–2 metres indoors. Its natural, tree-like structure can be maintained compact through pruning or allowed to grow tall as a statement feature.

Common Issues

  • Leaf drop: Sudden environmental changes or overwatering.

  • Yellowing leaves: Poor drainage or prolonged drought.

  • Brown leaf edges: Low humidity or exposure to draughts.

  • Pests: Occasionally scale insects, mealybugs, or spider mites.

Background and Benefits

Ficus cyathistipula is native to tropical African rainforests, where it grows along riverbanks and shaded understories. Its name translates roughly to “cup-stipule fig,” referencing the small cup-shaped structures that appear at the base of the leaves.

In cultivation, it has gained popularity for its resilience and attractive, polished foliage. It’s also an excellent air-purifying plant, helping to remove toxins and improve indoor air quality.

Elegant yet robust, Ficus cyathistipula combines the tropical aesthetic of larger fig species with a more compact, manageable growth habit — perfect for contemporary homes.

Quick Care Summary

  • Light: Bright, indirect; tolerates moderate light

  • Water: Lightly moist; allow topsoil to dry slightly

  • Temperature: 18–26°C; avoid below 12°C

  • Humidity: Average indoor; mist occasionally

  • Soil: Rich, well-draining compost

  • Feed: Every 4–6 weeks in spring/summer

  • Growth: Upright indoor tree, 1.5–2 m; glossy, oval-shaped deep green leaves

⚠️ Toxicity Note: Like most Ficus species, Ficus cyathistipula produces a milky latex sap that can irritate the skin and is toxic if ingested. Keep away from pets and children.

🌿 Styling Tip:
Place Ficus cyathistipula in a statement pot to accentuate its glossy, tree-like form. It works beautifully as a focal plant in living rooms, entryways, or offices — adding structure, calm, and natural greenery. Pair with smaller, contrasting plants like Asparagus setaceus or Aglaonema ‘Ivory Jade’ for layered tropical appeal.

It shouldn’t be this hard to use, don’t like the fabric guard
      Color: Gray/Blue, Size: Large
This review is for the Best Brands listing “Farberware Large Lint Remover & Fabric Shaver Set – Battery Powered Sweater Shaver with Triple Blades and Extra Sticky Roller for Pet Hair, Fuzz & Pilling on Clothes & Furniture“. This set contains a fabric shaver as well as a lint removal roller. The fabric shaver needs batteries, not included, and the orientation is weirdly not marked on the side that takes the batteries but instead on the outside of the battery lid, on the last surface you’d check. So even though this needed a very normal two AA batteries it was still harder to install than it needed to be. Also, emptying the lint collector is harder than it needs to be. I need to use both hands and hold the remover against my body to detach the lint container. It comes off with a “click” that does not bode well for the durability of the device. As for using the lint remover, it does an ok job. It has a fabric guard to presumably prevent anyone creating holes in the fabric they’re cleaning and the guard can be lowered/raised slightly. However, it keeps the lint remover far enough away from the fabric you need to press pretty hard to get decent results and you can’t get as close as you need in some areas due to the bulk of the plastic guard. The handle is also a little bulky, it’s like they made the entire device larger instead of just making the shaving surface and the lint catcher larger. The lint roller was pretty standard. I have long nails and usually struggle with detailed tasks, but I was able to get to the sticky panels without too much hassle. Although u made a bit of a mess trying to get the lint roller started, the roller was nicely sticky and lasted a little longer than some cheaper alternatives. I was able to get the sticky sheet to tear at the perforated edge easily. I have used the shaver to clean an old wool sweater as well as a newer pair of jersey sweatpants, and the results were ok but I prefer my smaller, older lint remover for effectiveness and ease of use. The lint roller was very nice, although I sort of expected the pretty pattern to be on the entire roll not just the front cover. This set works ok, but I really don’t like the lint remover and am removing a star because it’s harder to use than it should be, including the presence of the bulky fabric guard.

      good
      Size: 23.6 Inch, Color: White
I recently added this bathroom shelf, and it’s been a great upgrade for organizing my space. It was easy to install and feels sturdy enough to hold everyday essentials like toiletries, skincare products, and small containers without any issues. The design is simple and clean, which helps it blend in nicely with the rest of the bathroom. It doesn’t take up much space but still provides enough storage to reduce clutter around the sink or shower area. One thing I appreciate is how practical it is for small bathrooms—everything is within reach, and it makes the space feel more organized overall. As long as it’s installed properly, it holds up well and stays secure. The only downside is that heavier items might not be ideal depending on the material, but for regular use, it does the job perfectly. Overall, a functional and affordable solution if you’re looking to add extra storage and keep your bathroom tidy.

A lot of my books fit on here and there’s still more room left if I wanted to buy more books. It’s a simple looking bookshelf but it’s really pretty. It’s also sturdy the only reason I gave it a 4 stars instead of 5 was because it comes with its own plastic screw anchors and they are crap. The shelves were wobbly when we installed them using the plastic screw anchors that came with the packaging. My dad set mine up and luckily he had a bunch of his own so he switched them out with better screw anchors. Once we made that switch it was perfect, there was no wobble or shaking at all. So that’s my only piece of advice. Besides for the screw anchors everything else is perfect
