'Red Lady' Papaya (Carica papaya 'Red Lady')

The 'Red Lady' Papaya is a vibrant and prolific fruit-bearing plant known for its sweet, reddish-orange fruit and its adaptability to various growing conditions. Originating from the tropics, it has gained popularity among gardeners and fruit enthusiasts alike due to its flavor and ornamental appeal.

Common Names:

Since it belongs to the papaya family, it can also be generically referred to as Papaya or Pawpaw in some regions.

Best Growing Environment:

'Red Lady' Papayas prefer well-draining soils that are rich in organic matter. Although they can handle various soil types, sandy loam to loamy soils is ideal. Regularly adding compost or aged manure can improve soil fertility and boost growth.

Average Height:

Typically, 'Red Lady' Papaya plants can reach an average height of 8-12 feet. They have a relatively slender trunk adorned with large, lobed leaves.

Growth Rate:

'Red Lady' Papayas showcase a rapid growth rate, especially in their initial years. Given the proper conditions, they can start fruiting within 6-12 months after planting.

Sun Requirements:

These plants thrive best in full sunlight. A minimum of 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily is essential for healthy growth and optimal fruit production.

Cold Hardiness:

'Red Lady' Papayas are tropical plants and are sensitive to cold temperatures. They are best suited for USDA zones 10-11. Prolonged exposure to temperatures below 32F can be detrimental, and frost can be fatal.

Water Requirements:

While they do appreciate consistent moisture, especially during the fruiting stage, overwatering or allowing the plants to sit in water can lead to root rot. It's essential to water deeply but ensure the soil dries out slightly between watering sessions.

Detailed Fertilizing Guide:

  1. Seedlings: Use a balanced, slow-release fertilizer with a ratio like 14-14-14.
  2. Juvenile to Fruiting Stage: As the plant grows, switch to a higher potassium and phosphorous fertilizer to support flowering and fruiting, like 10-30-10.
  3. Mature Plants: Monthly applications of compost or well-rotted manure can help maintain soil fertility. Regularly provide minor elements, especially iron, to prevent deficiencies.

Planting Guide:

  1. Site Selection: Choose a sunny, well-draining location sheltered from strong winds.
  2. Planting Hole: The hole should be twice as wide as the root ball and of similar depth.
  3. Positioning: Place the plant in the hole, ensuring it's straight. The top of the root ball should be level with the ground.
  4. Soil Backfill: Refill the hole, patting down gently to remove air pockets. Water generously to help the plant settle.

USDA Zone:

'Red Lady' Papaya is suitable for USDA hardiness zones 10-11. It thrives in tropical and subtropical conditions. In cooler zones, it's best grown in containers and moved indoors during colder months.

The 'Red Lady' Papaya offers a touch of the tropics, whether you're cultivating it for its delicious fruits or for its tropical aesthetic appeal. With the right conditions and care, it promises a bountiful harvest and an enchanting presence in any garden.

Poor quality control - maybe outlet store leftovers
Size: 11.5, Color: Burgundy Polished Full Grain
The two shoes were not the same size. They were both labeled 11 1/2 but one shoe was larger than the other and the fit was poor. I returned the first pair and ordered a replacement. This time the shoes were close to the same size but too loose and the left one has sewing issues. I've bought Johnston & Murphy for years because of the quality. These were to replace an existing pair of burgundy penny loafers that have finally worn out (even after several heal/sole replacements). That is the expected quality. I suspect Nashville Shoe Warehouse may be handling shoes that didn't measure up for the quality; more like an outlet mall than getting the J&M quality I've come to expect. Update: went to Johnston & Murphy site to buy "direct" from the manufacturer. There were several recent reviews where the shoes were long and didn't fit properly. Genesco - please step up the manufacture / crafting of these classic shoes to the level of quality they used to have.

Way too narrow
Size: 9.5 Wide, Color: Burgundy Polished Full Grain
I ordered a wide in this shoe, but it was still way too narrow. I had to return them. Otherwise, it looked like a nice quality shoe.

I usually wear 11.5's, but I buy 1/2 size smaller to accommodate for stretch. Leather relaxes.
Size: 11, Color: Burgundy Polished Full Grain
5 STARS: These shoes are awesome. I keep coming back for more. I have major foot problems, have tried all kinds of shoes, orthotics, and inserts... but believe it or not, these shoes work better than any of that stuff. I wear them daily. I buy lots of them, for home, for church, and I'm getting my first pair of J&M boots today, for winters in Indiana... Brrrr

Sleek, upscale and supremely comfortable
Size: 9, Color: Cognac
I did not know that Marc Joseph makes hands free slip ins. I own four pair of Skechers, and I thought they were the only game in town. I decided that I wanted a pair of business casual pair of wingtips. I already own two pair of Skechers Mark Nason wingtips in blue and black nubuck, so I bought a pair of their cognac colored. Perfectly fine shoes, but when they arrived, I didn't like the color, so the search was on! I found these cognac-colored Mark Joseph's and hands down, they fit the bill for what I was looking for! I actually bought two more pair of Skechers in the brown family in the same oxford, elastic lace style: One pair of another style of their Mark Nason line and one pair of their Garza line. So now I am comparing three pair of Skechers to the Marc Joseph's. Obsessive, I know :). Luckily, I have a Skechers store near me for easy returns. The look I was going for is a sleek, business casual that I could dress up or down. Three things that I love about the Marc Joseph's are the beautiful cognac finish: the white yet lower profile soles and the more formal, narrower toe style. The MJ's nailed it with the color. They have a slightly darker, more lustrous and glossier look than the others. The color alone looks classier and pairs well with black pants which I wear for work almost every day. The white soles are exactly what I was looking for. The visible rise is probably about a third of the thickness of the others and are a much more subtle, classier look. They offset the cognac color nicely but are not that in your face, sneaker looking, thick white sole. When I was comparing them to the others right out of the box, I thought they would be too narrow and tight because they looked sleeker and narrower than the others. But they fit perfectly and were very comfortable right out of the box. Upon closer inspection and comparison, I realized the narrower, sleeker look is because the eyelets for the elastic shoelaces are closer together that give the illusion that the shoe is narrower. They compensate for what might create a tighter fit across the top of your foot with two stretchy "gores" they are called on either side of the upper part. The "slits" are nicely finished, and you can't see the stretchy part and add a nice design touch to the shoe. But between them and the elastic shoelaces, they must stretch just enough to make them extremely comfortable across the top. So, if you have a high instep/arch, they should accommodate it nicely. Last but not least, they are very comfortable shoes. I wear a size 8 1/2 to 9 and my foot is slightly on the wide side. I bought the size 9's and they fit perfectly. If you are between sizes or have wider feet, you may want to size up a half size. Because the Skechers have much thicker soles, they might be slightly more cushioned, but the MJ's are cushioned more than enough for my purposes and very comfortable. Plus, they actually just feel better on my feet. I can't speak to how durable they will be as I just got them, but so far, so good. So, there you have it. I rely on other people's reviews a lot when buying online, and especially for shoes. I know it's always a crap shoot, particularly when buying shoes online, so I hope this review helps. Everybody's feet are different, but I highly recommend these.
