Ficus microcarpa ‘Ginseng’ (S-Type) is a striking and sculptural indoor bonsai tree, admired for its curved S-shaped trunk, glossy green canopy, and strong architectural form. A tropical evergreen native to Southeast Asia, India, and Malaysia, this variety has become a favourite among bonsai enthusiasts and interior stylists for its balance of natural artistry and effortless care.

The plant’s thick, bulbous trunk — known as the ginseng root — is a defining feature, symbolising strength, stability, and endurance. The S-Type bonsai form enhances this aesthetic by introducing a graceful serpentine curve to the main trunk, creating a sense of flow and movement. Above the sturdy base, a dense canopy of oval, glossy green leaves forms a lush crown that contrasts beautifully with the rugged, textured trunk below.

Perfectly proportioned and full of character, Ficus ‘Ginseng’ (S-Type) represents harmony between nature and design — a living sculpture that embodies calm, balance, and refined elegance.

Ficus microcarpa ‘Ginseng’ (S-Type Bonsai) – Care Guide

Light

Thrives in bright, indirect light, though it can tolerate moderate light conditions. For the healthiest growth and compact canopy, provide several hours of filtered sunlight each day. Avoid prolonged exposure to harsh direct sun, which can scorch the leaves, or deep shade, which may lead to sparse foliage.

Watering

Keep the soil lightly moist but not waterlogged. Water thoroughly when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry to the touch, allowing excess water to drain freely. Avoid letting the roots sit in standing water. In winter, reduce watering frequency but never allow the soil to dry completely, as this may cause leaf drop.

Temperature and Humidity

  • Temperature: Prefers warmth between 20–28 °C; avoid exposure below 15 °C and protect from cold draughts.

  • Humidity: Enjoys moderate humidity (40–70%). Mist occasionally or place near a humidifier if the air is very dry, especially in centrally heated environments.

Soil and Potting

Use a well-draining bonsai soil mix, typically composed of akadama, pumice, lava rock, or coarse sand. This ensures good aeration and prevents root rot. Repot every 2–3 years in early spring to refresh the soil and prune the roots as needed to maintain the plant’s compact shape.

Feeding

Feed every 4–6 weeks from spring through early autumn with a balanced bonsai fertiliser or a diluted, all-purpose plant food. During the cooler months, reduce feeding frequency as the plant’s growth slows. Consistent feeding supports strong roots and a healthy canopy.

Pruning and Maintenance

Regular pruning helps maintain the desired shape and proportion. Trim new shoots after 6–8 leaves have formed, cutting back to 2–4 leaves to encourage branching and canopy density. Always use sterilised tools. Wipe leaves gently with a damp cloth to remove dust and highlight their glossy texture.

Growth and Maturity

A slow to moderate grower, Ficus ‘Ginseng’ (S-Type) typically reaches 40–60 cm in height when maintained as a bonsai. With proper care, it can live for decades, developing an increasingly intricate trunk and refined branch structure. Mature specimens exude an ancient, timeless character that makes them focal pieces in both contemporary and traditional interiors.

Common Issues

  • Yellow leaves: Overwatering or sudden environmental change.

  • Leaf drop: Low humidity, cold drafts, or inconsistent watering.

  • Dull leaves: Insufficient light or lack of feeding.

  • Pests: Occasionally scale or mealybugs; remove manually and treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap if needed.

Background and Benefits

Ficus microcarpa originates from tropical regions of Asia, where it grows as a large canopy tree. In bonsai form, it symbolises strength, wisdom, and endurance, often associated with stability and peace in Eastern philosophy. The ‘Ginseng’ name refers to the thickened roots and base that resemble the shape of ginseng roots, while the S-Type training adds a fluid, artistic curve to the trunk.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, this species is also an excellent air-purifying plant, filtering indoor toxins while enriching air quality. Resilient and forgiving, it’s ideal for bonsai beginners and seasoned enthusiasts alike, blending natural tranquillity with a sculptural, contemporary style.

Styling Tip

Elegant and easy to customize to organize your desk
    Color: Black, Color: Black
This desk organizer was higher quality and more elegant looking than I thought it would be, so I decided to use it to hold some things on my dresser. It’s too pretty to hide away in my drawer. The compartments snap into place with magents so you can adjust based on how you want to organize your items. The tray itself is heavy, durable, and well-made. The compartments and edges seem to be authentic wood, and the base surface of the tray is a rubber-like surface that keeps things from slipping while still looking very nice. I like this tray enough to put it on display as a part of my home decor. It’s not only useful for organizing some odds and ends, but is also very beautiful and well made.

    Stylish Aesthetic with Functional Limitations
    Color: Black
This desk organizer offers a sophisticated look that complements modern furniture and decor quite well. The combination of aluminum and walnut creates a professional appearance that effectively tidies up a workspace or nightstand. I particularly appreciate the soft-touch base, which provides a safe surface for delicate items like phone screens or watches, ensuring they remain free of scratches. Additionally, the materials are very easy to wipe down and maintain. However, the build quality does not entirely justify the premium price point. The aluminum components feel more like thin, shaped sheet metal rather than a solid, high-end material. While the walnut accents are a nice touch, they lack the weight and substance I expected for a valet tray in this category. The primary functional drawback lies in the magnetic adjustment system. The magnets are relatively weak, meaning that accidentally bumping a divider while reaching for an item can easily shift the layout. This requires frequent readjustments, which can be frustrating during a busy workday. Furthermore, the magnetic rails can interfere with other metallic or magnetic objects you might try to store. If you are looking for a purely aesthetic upgrade to organize lightweight items, this tray serves that purpose, but it falls short in terms of stability and material density.

    Love the customizable dividers
    Color: Black, Color: Black
I really like this desk drawer organizer tray. It comes with two removable adjustable dividers that are magnetic. They have a strong magnetic pull and stay in place and do not move or shift at all. I love the overall look of it. It’s very sophisticated looking. It can be suitable for a man or a woman. If it’s into my drawer perfectly and I love the smooth modern design of it.

    A nice customizable organizer.
    Color: Black, Color: Black
This is a nice organizer for a drawer or nightstand. Comes in a box that is not overly bulky and is well protected. It's quick and easy to adjust and put together. the seperators are magnetic so you can customize it to fit your needs. There are two cut outs for charging cords and it fits a phone easily along with other accessories. The unit feels solid and well built, it has a good weight to it. I do wish the deviders were a bit easier to get square, but that's more just my idiosyncrasies.

    Nice Desk Organizer
    Color: Black, Color: Black
This particular desk organizer has the little strips of wood that each have a magnet installed inside them. This allows you to move the wood strips to different locations and adjust the areas to fit whatever size item you want to put in there. It's very easy to just move them around and the bottom of the tray has a nice material in it that prevents scratching the items you place in there. The usable area on the tray is 12-1/2" x 8-1/4" x 3/4" and the overall size is 13-5/8" x 8-3/8" x 1". It fits nicely in drawers or simply having it sit on top of a desk to hold items. It also is made out of good quality and is very sturdy.
